At Turner, we think of our workplace as “our house.” In our house, we foster a caring environment. Everyone has a duty to comply with the OHS Act and Regulation. However, Turner has set higher standards in a number of areas. Before you start on site it is important you understand what these are and what you are expected to do.

Voids Overview

  • 1” gaps within scaffold must be covered
  • 3” and under voids in floor must be covered with ½’’ ply and marked orange
  • Any opening between 3” and 24” should be protected by securing ¾” plywood and sprayed “Danger” in orange.
  • Any floor opening greater than 24” requires guardrail protection.

Bump Lines

  • 15ft from edges (Exception approved by Turner management)
  • The bump-line shall consist of portable weighted posts supporting a taut chain, cable, or rope.
  • The rope, wire or chain must have a breaking strength of 500 lbs.
  • Must be flagged every 6 feet.
  • Lowest point (including sag) is not less than 39 inches from the walking/working surface
  • Highest point is not more than 45 inches from the walking/working surface.

Ladder/Platform Specifics

  • All ladders & platforms must be tagged with Turner's green tag.
  • You must ensure to use the proper sized ladder/platform for the task.
  • Any ladder or platform used outside of the ladder matrix requires a permit that is approved by Turner

DUST CONTROL

  • Minimize dust levels by:
  • cutting materials off site,
  • dampening down cutting activities at the source,
  • or using vacuum tools at the source
  • If dust cannot be reduced to safe level then barriers must be installed to contain dust
  • PPE must be worn by workers inside the barrier

EVERYTHING ON WHEELS

Turner's “Nothing Hits the Ground or Everything on Wheels” policy requires:

  • Nothing touches the ground
  • Everything on wheels where possible
  • Materials to be secured and cannot roll away
  • Racks and bins are fit for the purpose i.e. are properly engineered for the weight

By putting materials on wheels, we can save time, make work more efficient, and improve safety.

  • All extension cords should follow the following cord management rules:
  • Cords must be kept off the floor where possible,
  • Cords must not be routed so that they are being constantly driven over and,
  • They need to be routed to avoid contact with sharp edges.
  • All power supplies must be protected by a GFCI device, including if connecting to a base building supply.
  • Any extension cords found to be damaged or to have extensive patch repair must be removed from site.

  • If you bring any hazardous materials onto a Turner site or any product that could cause pollution, you must ensure:
  • these are stored in a manner that they are secure,
  • protected from accidental loss and prevented from coming into contact with an ignition source that could cause a fire or explosion or some other material that could result in a harmful chemical reaction.

  • Controlled access zone must be established where there is a risk from overhead hazard
  • Barrier proportionate to risk
  • Message sign to identify hazards and contact details
  • Always try to utilize the most preferred barriers where possible.

LIFTING EQUIPMENT

  • 75% and over are considered a Critical Lift and requires a Turner Critical Lift Permit
  • Turner Crane permits are required for all other lifts.
  • Taglines must be fitted to all loads and should be insulated where electrical hazards exist.

Mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPS)

  • All workers must tie off in MEWPs.
  • It is required that all operators in a space with overhead hazards shall “Render it Dead” (engaging the emergency stop of the lift to ensure that no accidental operation will occur).
  • MEWP’s must be designed to prevent sustained involuntary operation.
  • Examples: a protective shroud over the controls, providing a protective cage around the operator, the addition of pressure bar, or secondary engagement switch that will stop the power if triggered.

Electrical Equipment

  • Cords & Sockets must be industrial grade
  • 100% GFCI protection
  • Live boxes must have cover plate
  • Cable repairs must be by qualified electrician
  • 3 repairs max per cord before it must be disposed of
  • Panels must be mounted off the floor, in a secured cabinet or with a door.
